The FC Barcelona Players Association gave on Monday the 2020 Barça Players award to the women's first team, for the whole squad's attitude during the first months of the coronavirus pandemic. The four captains, Alexia Putellas, Marta Torrejón, Sandra Paños and Patri Guijarro, have received the distinction on behalf of the team. The Association's president and vice president, Ramon Alfonseda and Tente Sánchez, handed over the gift alongside FC Barcelona board member Xavier Puig.
The 2020 edition of the Fair Play Award, granted by the Association every year, was honored to both the men's and women's first teams. For circumstances regarding the pandemic, the prize could not be given until now.
Association members for life
As well as for the men's team, the gift was a personalized replica of the FC Barcelona jersey from the 20's, with each captain's name and number on it. They have also collected the card that establishes them as honorary members of the Association for life. As president Alfonseda claims, "years will go by and the players will carry on with their careers, but the Association will always be their home". The whole women’s first team squad is now part of the Asociation, who has already taken in 115 former women’s team players as members.
According to the award's jury, the player's attitude from February to June of last year, resulted in individual and collective gestures such as economic contributions and the participation in initiatives promoted by FC Barcelona and other institutions. The workers of the Club, hospitals, social entities, health care workers and the scientific community were all benefited from these selfless actions.
