It’s been 13 years since we inherited a great Barça Players’ Association, full of values and the pride of the FC Barcelona ex-players. A series of people even put money from their own pockets towards making the Foundation a reality. I ask myself many times if the likes of Gracia, Vergés and Biosca, the lifeblood of our work, would be proud of us. And with humility, but resoluteness, I can say that the answer would definitely be a yes.
I know some Association members fear growth, but I think that growth is both necessary and essential. FC Barcelona itself grows every season, and we, on our level, must accompany that growth. Today, every one of the Club’s ex-players can play football if they want to. Today, all former Barça players who need it can take part in educational courses in order to improve their employment prospects. We can offer medical attention and physical recovery to our members, who can take part in sporting activities safely. We are very proud of the aid which the Barça Veterans Foundation gives to those who need it most; we try to make jobs available, and we hope to make more available to ex-players who are looking for employment.
We are lucky to have 1st Team players and coaches to be proud of, who donate 0.5% of their salary to us every year. And we are convinced that in the new Barça Space the Association will also have its new space. A space that is ready for the future; to be able to train on more days, with new offices and a new social space.
Growth shouldn’t be a cause for fear; on the contrary, it should encourage us. And we should always bear in mind the values that have been passed down to us by our predecessors, who never used the Association for their own interests, but rather for the good of all Barça ex-players. A future fit for the likes of Seguer, Gracia, Vergés, Olivella, Biosca, Rovira, Zaldúa and so many others.
